Homage to Klimt
This collection has been inspired by the jewel-like paintings of the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. Working regularly in Vienna since 1980 enabled me to view many originals and turning from Australian inspiration I developed my designs from these seductive works. My sketch books contain designs based on over thirty of Klimt’s paintings. Prime inspiration has come from the Beethoven Frieze in the Secession building in Vienna, and the well-known paintings and mosaics with multicoloured gold such as The Kiss, Expectation, Fulfilment and Adele Bloch-Bauer. The landscape – Kirche in Cassone also inspired a number of works, as did Klimt’s allegories of Sculpture, Music and Truth. Gemstones are now a regular part of my palette, one with an inner sparkle and depth to make the pieces sing.
